I have experienced the greatest moment in my whole time of gaming

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition released March 20th. One of the only first-party Nintendo games to not ever be in a direct, releasing at the end of the life cycle of the switch, and already not a popular game (black sheep of the series). It will likely not perform well and very few people will experience it. For me, it was magical.

10 years ago in 2015, my brother bought this game, and it was technically my first RPG ever. I never beat it as it was too complex for me, and I actually eventually returned 6 years later to be walled by the same boss (chapter 9). I did eventually watch the rest of the story though however. With the release of definitive edition, I finally had the chance to beat the game, and also the writers had a chance to end the cliffhanger the game ended on (the original game didn’t have an ending).

This game. It’s simply amazing. It has one of the largest hand crafted open worlds ever made, made by the same people who designed Breath of the Wilds and Tears of the Kingdom’s world. It is so alive and really feels super “alien”. It can be explored on foot or in the air, in a giant robot or not. Two complex combat and customization systems for each style of gameplay. The world building is amazing, and personally is the most interesting setting ever in a Sci-Fi story, a prospering planet that all these different aliens are randomly arriving on.

To boot, the music, mainly composed by famous artist Hiroyuki Sawano (of Attack on Titan and Solo Leveling fame) is simply amazing. You want rap music? They got you with Black Tar. A haunting and beautiful area theme? Sylvalum night. A heart wrenching German song? So nah, So fern..

Finally finishing the game itself was an experience in itself. But the reason I’m actually making this post is the new story content so while I won’t talk about spoilers if you want to stay completely blind don’t read.

While the new story does not answer every question I have, it gave me closure. The story ended. “Something about this planet” is no longer then. And along the way gave me so many moments where I sat with my mouth agape from new lore or the visuals. With high stakes and moments to connect with characters. Just to paint a picture of what the new story has more of, here’s a 10 year old cutscene when Monolithsoft was still pretty small. These might be the BEST Sci-Fi cutscenes ever created.

The thing that tied the knot was the music. Throughout the new story, it uses a lot of music that was only used once or never used in the original game but was still created for it, making it feel fresh. The new tracks do not feel like X’s Sawano style, marking the shift to something fresh (I believe Misaki Umase composed it). But oh my, the new tracks are still amazing. Here is the one from the reveal trailer, sounding straight out of Shadow the Hedgehog. Xenoblade has always been snubbed in the OST category at The Game Awards so this year it should at least be nominated again.

The ending may be the most hype thing I’ve ever seen, while not being the best (Xenoblade Chronicles 3 holds that one), and I have walked away from the game amazed. Not disappointed, but not satisfied. I want more. I need more. Luckily there’s a large post game but I hope X is a series Monolithsoft continues, not just mainline.

TLDR: Play Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, it is not connected to the other games and you can jump in here. It has customizable mechs and fast paced combat. You can explore a giant open world that probably is the best looking one on the Switch. It has super good music. And the cutscenes are hype.
