For me, I'd have to say it was World of Warcraft. Prior to WoW, I played Everquest for a couple of years. Absolutely loved the game overall, but there were some things that just irked me. When the first mention of WoW came out, I was at hype level 10. It looked to be an amazing MMORPG and fix so many of the problems with EQ, such as naked corpse runs and instanced dungeons, for example. When it finally released I was hooked from day one. It wasn't perfect, of course, but it was exactly what I had hoped for. It took the formula from EQ and made it better in pretty much every way. It was an instant classic that reached heights nobody thought possible. I don't think there will ever be a game that did what it did.
